Manthatisi [Mmanthatisi] was the name of a Mosotho queen whose name made many enemies shake in the early 19th Century. She was a powerful warrior who led strong men to fight off those who were considered enemies or a threat to her people, including British invaders. She also protected her territory and her people during the southern African slave trade. The people of Batlokoa loved and respected her as their queen. Many say that Manthatisi was not just their queen, but the whole soul of the army.
Her story is so remarkable that the South African Navy has honoured and paid homage to her by naming a submarine after her.
Queen Manthatisi was very influential across southern Africa during her reignand some chiefs surrounded and aligned with her instead of going to war with her. During the period of the Difeqane wars, many tribes were divided and spread into different parts of the land. The Batlokoa, a tribe of Basotho people highly skilled in working with iron, followed Manthatisi. After the death of her husband Kgosi Mokotjo, she took over as regent until her son Sekonyela was ready to rule. She was a strong, brave, and capable leader for times of war and times of peace. She used her strength, power, and bravery to keep her people safe. Queen Manthatisi had a fairly small body and that was not a weakness at all because she was strong in mind and character earning her the status of a brave warrior.
She was even given the nickname “Mosayane” – the tiny one. It is said that Manthatisi led an army force of about 40,000 warriors to conquer and seize kingdoms so that she could expand the territories of her kingdom. Eventually Manthatisi stepped down from the throne and her son became King when he became of age. It is reported that she died around 1835 and was buried outside Ficksburg, in what is today the Free State province of South Africa.
